How We Live Our Yoga Pa or How Not to Be My Patient

How We Live Our Yoga Pa: Personal Stories

Author: Valerie Jeremijenko

"This captivating, fresh collection of personal stories provocatively explores the question of 'what happens to a practice based on stillness and acceptance, in a world based on striving, distraction and insatiable appetites.' More than a dozen yoga practitioners shine light on their own lives to reveal a great breadth of possibilities about the reach of yoga for Americans."-Publishers Weekly, starred review

Village Voice

...space and the doctrine of fair use dictate that I urge you to buy this book and read the whole (Adrian Piper) essay, as well as the 13 other chapters by writers whose lives have been irretrievably altered by their practice of yoga. Jeremijenko, who teaches in the dance department of Virginia Commonwealth University, has done a great service in assembling this collection. Whether yoga is already part of your life or you merely feel it beckoning, How We Live Our Yoga is the perfect companion for what may well become a life-changing journey

Publishers Weekly

This captivating, fresh collection of personal stories provocatively explores the question of "what happens to a practice based on stillness and acceptance, in a world based on striving, distraction and insatiable appetites." More than a dozen yoga practitioners shine light on their own lives to reveal a great breadth of possibilities about the reach of yoga for Americans. Editor Jeremijenko has done fine work pulling together startlingly different lives that are revealed through superior, thoughtful writing. Not all the stories are glowing tributes by any means, which gives this compilation all the more credibility. Fulbright scholar Elizabeth Kadetsky's "Coming Apart in Pune" commences the collection with a less-than-flattering account of a stint in yoga guru B.K.S. Iyengar's studio in India. Indian-American poet Reetika Vazirani's poignant, ironic and hopeful "The Art of Breathing" crystallizes America's variant of yoga, detailing its strengths and weaknesses. For the estimated 15 million Americans who practice yoga, this book is a real boon. It isn't at all about how to do yoga, but it is about how to comprehend yoga in a very rich way. Lacking a glossary to explain some terms, this work is not for those with no familiarity with the world of asanas (poses). But for those with even a cursory knowledge of yoga practice, it proffers a highly interesting, refreshing and deeper gaze at an ancient gift. (Oct.) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

Library Journal

Most yoga texts instruct readers on how to achieve postures, how to sit during meditation, and so forth. In contrast, the evocative essays assembled in this volume illustrate yoga "off the mat" that is, practicing yoga in daily life. The contributors are practitioner-writers who follow a variety of yoga paths and have published in periodicals and anthologies. They do not shy away from tough subjects: practicing celibacy as a spiritual discipline, the way we subsume cultures without according them their depth, what yoga can teach us about death, and the relationship of yoga to injury, illness, and depression. The voices are strong even when they are unsure, as in essays that question the deification of teachers and gurus. Editor Jeremijenko, a yoga teacher and professor of dance and choreography at Virginia Commonwealth University, presents vital, high-quality, writing that speaks directly. Highly recommended for all public libraries and academic libraries with movement therapy collections. Elizabeth C. Stewart, Portland, ME Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

How Not to Be My Patient: A Physician's Secrets for Staying Healthy and Surviving Any Diagnosis

Author: Edward T Creagan

"By the time I see most of my patients, they have weeks, not months, left to live,"says Edward T. Creagan, M. D. , cancer specialist and professor, Mayo Clinic Medical School. "Let there be no doubt, they are courageous, and we have many incredible success stories that defy what we know about cancer. But truth be known, half of my patients never needed to walk into my exam room because their cancers were related to lifestyle choices they made along the way. I'm not placing blame or guilt. In this book, I will tell you what you can do, for yourself and your family, so you won't ever be my patient. "

How Not to Be My Patient teaches people how to talk so their doctors will listen. Dr. Creagan shares insights doctors are never taught in medical school-insights readers will be surprised to learn. He takes readers inside the examination room and teaches them how to make the most of their seven minutes-the average time of an office visit. Every one of us can lower our own risk of premature death and disability right now-it's never too late. But first, we need to take personal responsibility for our own health and welfare in order to decrease the risks of developing diseases, especially cancer-the most-feared disease of all.

With Dr. Creagan's prescription for prevention and survival, readers can take control of their health care, their medical records and their decision making. Dr. Creagan will also show patients how to wisely select and build partnerships with their doctors, even though today's bureaucratic strangleholds are driving doctors to retire early and forcing patients to the Internet for advice.

For those whose future includes anencounter with a life-changing illness such as cancer, heart disease or diabetes, Dr. Creagan has this empowering message: You can survive any diagnosis.

Publishers Weekly

Creagan, a cancer specialist at the highly acclaimed Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and co-writer Wendel present a hopeful yet realistic view of cancer treatment and prevention. Having treated thousands of cancer patients in the past 35 years, Creagan has seen it all. Contrary to its title, however, the book fails to reveal any truly earth-shattering secrets, but it does offer a comprehensive overview of the best ways to prevent cancer or deal with a diagnosis. Creagan stresses that a diagnosis of cancer need not be a death sentence, nor are our health destinies solely defined by heredity. A number of factors influence health, and Creagan outlines the ways to combat disease. Along with religion, spirituality and connectedness, Creagan advocates lifestyle changes, explaining that exercise, nutrition and early detection all play vital roles. The book includes a helpful section on how to communicate effectively with a physician as well as an explanatory checklist of important diagnostic tests. Becoming an "empowered" patient is crucial; Creagan suggests that all patients maintain copies of their medical records. Creagan responsibly and compassionately covers the many steps readers can take to give themselves the best odds of surviving or avoiding cancer and other diseases. (Oct.) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

Creagan, a Mayo Clinic cancer specialist, teams with Wendel, a consumer health information specialist, to outline how anyone can reduce the chances of being diagnosed with cancer, heart disease, stroke, and other major illnesses. Unlike other physician-written how-to-stay-healthy books, their guide addresses not only the body but the mind and spirit as well, discussing lifestyle behavioral choices, judicious health screening, and effective doctor-patient relationships for both genders at any age. Part 1 defines good health skills, such as exercise, nutrition, and eliminating negative behaviors (e.g., smoking). The authors also stress such psychosocial factors as having meaning and purpose in life. Part 2 outlines how to work with the doctor through good communication and becoming medically knowledgeable about one's health. Part 3 outlines how to survive any life-threatening diagnosis through additional measures, like a good support system, a good attitude, and appropriate complementary medicine. Incorporating patient stories, informative tables and sidebars, and encouraging "My Thoughts" at each chapter's end, the authors offer readers a sensible game plan for maintaining health and reducing their risks of life-threatening diseases. Highly recommended for all public and health consumer libraries.-Janice Flahiff, Medical Coll. of Ohio, Toledo Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Powerful Medicines or Healthy Eating During Pregnancy

Powerful Medicines: The Benefits, Risks, and Costs of Prescription Drugs

Author: Jerry Avorn

If you believe that the latest blockbuster medication is worth a premium price over your generic brand, or that doctors have access to all the information they need about a drug's safety and effectiveness each time they write a prescription, Dr. Jerry Avorn has some sobering news. Drawing on more than twenty-five years of patient care, teaching, and research at Harvard Medical School, he shares his firsthand experience of the wide gap in our knowledge of the effectiveness of one medication as compared to another. In Powerful Medicines, he reminds us that every pill we take represents a delicate compromise between the promise of healing, the risk of side effects, and an increasingly daunting price. The stakes on each front grow higher every year as new drugs with impressive power, worrisome side effects, and troubling costs are introduced.

This is a comprehensive behind-the-scenes look at issues that affect everyone: our shortage of data comparing the worth of similar drugs for the same condition; alarming lapses in the detection of lethal side effects; the underuse of life-saving medications; lavish marketing campaigns that influence what doctors prescribe; and the resulting upward spiral of costs that places vital drugs beyond the reach of many Americans.

In this engagingly written book, Dr. Avorn asks questions that will interest every consumer: How can a product judged safe by the Food and Drug Administration turn out to have unexpectedly lethal side effects? Why has the nation's drug bill been growing at nearly 20 percent per year? How can physicians and patients pick the best medication in its class? How do doctors actually make their prescribing decisions, and why dothose decisions sometimes go wrong? Why do so many Americans suffer preventable illnesses and deaths that proper drug use could have averted? How can the nation gain control over its escalating drug budget without resorting to rationing or draconian governmental controls?

Using clinical case histories taken from his own work as a practitioner, researcher, and advocate, Dr. Avorn demonstrates the impressive power of the well-conceived prescription as well as the debacles that can result when medications are misused. He describes an innovative program that employs the pharmaceutical industry's own marketing techniques to reduce use of some of the most overprescribed and overpriced products. Powerful Medicines offers timely and practical advice on how the nation can improve its drug-approval process, and how patients can work with doctors to make sure their prescriptions are safe, effective, and as affordable as possible.

This is a passionate and provocative call for action as well as a compelling work of clear-headed science.

Publishers Weekly

In this pragmatic volume, Avorn sets out an impressive plan for the American health care system to get helpful drugs to those who need them, protect patients from dangerous side effects and keep costs within reasonable limits. Avorn, chief of the division of pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacoeconomics at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, argues, "[F]or a sum no greater than our current drug budget, medications could provide all Americans with the most productive and cost-effective interventions in all of health care." Avorn claims, "[W]e waste billions of dollars a year on prescription drugs that are excessively priced, poorly prescribed, or improperly taken." To remedy this situation, reform is needed in how new drugs are approved and marketed. In addition, practicing physicians need access to state-of-the-art information about new medications, including how well they compare to established (and often cheaper) products. Computer technology, Avorn shows, can bring together the latest information on treatment options and drug contraindications. But changes in the pharmaceutical industry itself-of which Avorn does not hold a flattering view-may be necessary to eliminate pressure to prescribe the most heavily advertised and costly new product when old standbys are equally effective. Though this informative and witty book is overly long, it makes a compelling case for prescription sanity and shows how constructive change can realistically be achieved. (Aug. 20) Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

Avorn brings 30 years' experience as a physician and researcher to the current debate about pharmaceuticals. In the opening sections, "Benefits" and "Risks," he provides an excellent overview of the research techniques necessary to evaluate a drug's safety and effectiveness, while in "Cost" and "Information" he covers some of the same territory as Merrill Goozner's The $800 Million Pill and Stephen Ceccoli's Pill Politics regarding the development, marketing, and pricing of new drugs. Avorn's analysis, however, goes further than just criticizing the industry-he puts drug costs in the bigger picture of health resource allocation while pointing out the difficulty that both doctors and patients face in trying to find unbiased information. In the fifth and final section, he suggests more rational public policy. Avorn's coverage is thorough and his writing style engaging and even humorous. While accessible to lay readers, this title would also be an appropriate text for health sciences students. Highly recommended.-Eris Weaver, Redwood Health Lib., Petaluma, CA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

Kirkus Reviews

Cogent analysis of how pharmaceutical drugs are approved, promoted, and prescribed in this country, with some well-considered recommendations for improving the present system. According to Avorn (Medicine/Harvard Medical School), Americans waste billions of dollars on prescription drugs that are overpriced, poorly prescribed, and improperly taken. He draws on his extensive experience as researcher and physician to explore the relationships between benefits, risks, and the economic impact of prescription drugs. While the FDA comes under scrutiny for its failure to properly assess the risks of such medications as the diet drug Redux and the diabetes drug Rezulin, this is not another FDA-bashing book. Avorn's picture is bigger. Through case studies, he examines decisions made by the regulatory agencies, pharmaceutical companies, health policymakers, and physicians that reveal faults in the entire system. After examining how benefits and risks are discovered and measured, he turns to the difficult question of how these are balanced against each other when making decisions about a drug's use. Avorn finds that in the real world, the major source of information about drugs is the promotion departments of pharmaceutical companies. Surrounded by "an almost suffocating plethora of information of very uneven quality," physicians have not been prepared by their medical education to deal with it. He proposes an educational outreach program based in medical schools that would send academic "detail men" to doctors' offices just as drug companies do. They would provide neutral, evidence-based assessment of drug choices so that physicians would know which treatments were more better, safer, and morecost-effective. Avorn points to Canada, Australia, and Great Britain as countries whose drug-assessment procedures we can learn from. His final chapters offer concrete, practical ideas for improving the ways in which drugs are evaluated and pertinent information about them is disseminated. Marked by solid scholarship, measured criticism, and pithy comments: an informative and highly readable study that makes a significant contribution to the ongoing discussion of an important health care issue.

Aside from a step-by-step look at the in vitro methods that eventually yielded Margolis a successful pregnancy, the authors provide a chapter on practical concerns ("Figuring out Costs, Insurance, and What Is and Isn't Covered") and, thoughtfully, stories from couples using an array different methods (surrogacy, adoption, etc.) for dealing with infertility; further, she sprinkles her text with the addresses and web sites of helpful organizations. Personal, easy to read and possessed of a warm, welcome sense of humor, Margolis's book makes an excellent introduction for anyone facing fertility issues, putting a hopeful face on a distressing topic, providing much-needed support and pointing the way forward.

Group Psychotherapy and Recovery from Addiction: Carrying the Message

    Author: Jeffrey Roth

Learn what it's like to be a member of an addiction recovery group!

Group Psychotherapy and Recovery from Addiction: Carrying the Message is NOT a self-help book. Instead, it's a rare opportunity to sit in on a virtual therapy group and take part in a virtual Twelve Step meeting. The book's unique perspective lets you compare and contrast the experience of participating in a psychotherapy group and a Twelve Step group, including an examination of the Twelve Steps and The Twelve Traditions. The book demystifies the process of recovery, demonstrating all the important elements of the group process, including free association, resistance, transference, re-enactment, boundary management, interpretation, and confrontation.

Rather than relate shared stories of addicts in recovery or present abstract formulations on the group experience, Group Psychotherapy and Recovery from Addiction takes you inside the experiential process of recovery that can't be achieved in isolation. Your experience as a group "member" will help solve the mystery of the group process and provide you with insight into the scientific elements of recovery as the book builds a bridge between the Twelve Step programs and a psychoanalytic model of group functioning.

Group Psychotherapy and Recovery from Addiction examines:
    • how the group carries the message of recovery
    • the higher power of the group as a symbol of authority
    • the development of prayer and meditation as group analytic functions
    • addiction as a family disease
    • making amends as an export process
    • powerlessness and free association
    • unmanageability and resistance
    • surrender and transference
    • inventory and re-enactments
    • humility and working through
    • The Twelve Steps and The Twelve Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous
    • and much more!

    Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Patricia E. Murphy, PhD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This book offers a creative approach to providing information about group process in the treatment of addiction. Rather than providing information in a cognitive manner, the author invites the reader to enter into a group of first person participants.
Purpose: Arising from a theory that addiction is a disease of isolation, the book's aim is to support an understanding of the primary role of group therapy in treatment. The style of the book allows the reader to enter into a group process and to learn from experience. For those willing to engage in this type of learning, the book is a great text.
Audience: The author makes clear that this is not a self-help book. Rather, it is a book intended for the use of those who work with persons who have addictions.
Features: The book has a unique style of asking the reader to join a group. Different fonts for each participant allow a conversation without the interruption of indicating the speaker. Some who are academically inclined might prefer a book based more on research. On the other hand, the professional who might not have time to attend a recovery group could develop helpful insights from the book's informal, though well developed approach.
Assessment: At first, the varied fonts seem off-putting. The reader might not bother to go any farther than leafing or flipping through the pages. However, spending time with this group is very educational. The author's well-reasoned approach and the clear description of the application of this method of healing makes this an extraordinary book that is apt to be of interest to those with education in psychiatry as well as to those with a less technical background.

As governments seek to mitigate the cost of state-subsidized healthcare, branding in the pharmaceutical industry has become a critical issue. Drugs companies must change their methods of communication and distribution--focusing more on their direct relationship with the consumer. This requires fundamental changes in consumer behavior, access to information, freedom of choice, and value for money. Brands and brand values will play a leading role in this process, as has been seen with products such as Prozac and Viagra. This book by Interbrand Newell and Sorrell, the world's leading branding consultancy, provides cutting-edge thinking on this area and lessons for anyone involved in brand development and management.

The Jumbled Jigsaw or John Barleycorn

The Jumbled Jigsaw: An Insider's Approach to the Treatment of Cluster Conditions in Autism

    Author: Donna Williams

The Jumbled Jigsaw exposes Autism spectrum conditions not as a single entity, but as the combination of a whole range of often untreated underlying conditions. Exploring everything from mood, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive and tic disorders to dependency, identity and personality issues, information processing, sensory perceptual problems and gut and immune disorders, Donna Williams demonstrates how such common conditions can combine to form a 'cluster condition' that underpins the label 'Autism Spectrum Disorder'.

The Jumbled Jigsaw empowers and challenges families to look at what they can do to alter their child's environment and address the combination of underlying issues that up the tempo of each person's 'Autism'. It provides carers with the information they need to navigate the expanding Autism 'marketplace' and demand the right tools for the job. Donna also confronts society's reluctance to embrace diversity and puts up a challenge to professionals to recognise the various, often treatable conditions that lead to an Autism spectrum diagnosis, and deliver a more effective service to those in need.

Written in a user-friendly style, this thought-provoking book is an invaluable resource for Auties, Aspies and parents, as well as professionals, policy makers and service providers.

    Author: Joyce Golden Seyburn

Seven Secrets to Raising a Happy and Healthy Child is a timeless collection of wisdom that's nurturing to both the child and the caregiver. It's a heartfelt eye-opener based on the 5,000-year-old preventive health-care system from ancient India -- Ayurveda -- the science of life. This book has no age boundaries and can be easily applied to any child. Joyce reminds you of the simple, ancient Ayurvedic truth: that if a parent is happy, then the child will be happy. She writes: "A mother's happiness during pregnancy is a baby's most vital nourishment." She goes on to say: "We need to go back to fundamental values and practices that ensure preventive health and stability in the challenging times ahead." This uniquely informative book on the mind/body approach to pregnancy and parenting prepares you, as parents, for the journey of nurturing your child by giving you simple tools to use along the way.

Tattoos, Desire and Violence: Marks of Resistance in Literature, Film and Television

    Author: Karin Beeler

Whether they graphically depict an individual's or a community's beliefs, express the defiance of authority, or brand marginalized groups, tattoos are a means of interpersonal communication that dates back thousands of years. Evidence of the tattoo's place in today's popular culture is all around-in advertisements, on the stereotypical outlaw character in films and television, in supermarket machines that dispense children's wash-away tattoos, and even in the production of a tattooed Barbie doll.

This book explores the tattoo's role, primarily as an emblem of resistance and marginality, in recent literature, film, and television. The association of tattoos with victims of the Holocaust, slaves, and colonized peoples; with gangs, inmates, and other marginalized groups; and the connection of the tattoo narrative to desire and violence are discussed at length.

Karin Beeler is an associate professor in the English department at the University of Northern British Columbia in Prince George, Canada. She lives in Prince George.

Gua Sha: A Traditional Technique for Modern Practice

    Author: Arya Nielsen

This is the first English language book on the ancient therapeutic technique 'Gua Sha'. It is a technique commonly used in Asia and Southeast Asia by TCM practitioners, Chinese families and individuals who know and use it as part of their 'health culture'. In Gua Sha, the skin is pressured in strokes i.e. scraped (but not broken) by a blunt edge (Chinese families used a spoon). This, in Western terms, raises extravasated blood and metabolic waste which collects in muscle tissue, and encourages its departure. Gua Sha is often used to counteract muscle strain through athletic injury, back pain, and conditions beyond muscle injury alone. The result, visually, is livid discolouration of the skin which subsides in a few days, considerably faster than a bruise. For this reason practitioners in the West have been afraid of using it. However it can be a very useful technique to know how to use, and will enhance the skills of any practitioner using it while giving them another treatment method to help increase their clinical skills. This book brings the technique alive for Western practitioners, with clear discussion of how to do it - including correct technique, appropriate application, and difficulties to bear in mind - and when to use it, and superb colour illustrations and specially commissioned line drawings to demonstrate the technique. The author is an expert practitioner of 'Gua Sha'.
    • There is no other book on the market which covers this very useful technique
    • Practitioners will be able to learn a new technique and enhance their skills with the aid of this thorough, reliable and clear guide
    • Covers aspects of the subject relevant to a wide range ofprofessionals, particularly any 'hands-on' practitioners
    • Clear, colour photographs show the practitioner exactly what to expect in the way of clinical results
    • Written by an expert practitioner who has carried out much research in this area and has experience of using Gua Sha in a wide variety of cases
    • Includes an introduction by Ted Kaptchuk - one of the very top names in international TCM

Preventing Addiction: What Parents Must Know to Immunize Their Kids Against Drug and Alcohol Addiction

    Author: John C Fleming

"Addiction is a chronic, progressive and incurable disease," says author John C. Fleming, a Louisiana physician who specializes in treating individuals and families facing the problem. "Though treatable, recovery rates are very low." Prevention is the only guaranteed way to avoid the life-long, personal-and-family misery associated with drug abuse, Fleming maintains. In his ground-breaking book, Fleming shows parents how to truly "drug-proof" their children. Parents wanting to help their children avoid drugs altogether as well as parents who already face the prospect of a drug-using child or teen will benefit greatly by reading and implementing the techniques described in his book.

When Parkinson's Strikes Early: Voices, Choices, Resources and Treatment

    Author: Barbara Blake Krebs

Parkinson's disease is often associated with the elderly, but half a million sufferers are in their early fifties or younger. This disorder carries both a physical and social stigma, with neurological degeneration made worse by the refusal of many to seek help. When Parkinson's Strikes Early grew out of an Internet discussion group in 1996, and was further inspired by actor Michael J. Fox's revelation that he has Parkinson's disease. This book covers symptoms, side effects of medication, support networks, and surgery options, and explores the physical, emotional, and social struggles that face young people with Parkinson's. Resources, advocacy ideas, and an index are also included.

    The Eye Book or Belonging

The Eye Book: A Complete Guide to Eye Disorders and Health

    Author: Gary H Cassel

When all is well with our eyes, most of us take them for granted. But when our vision is blurred or our eyes are itchy and watery, it's hard to concentrate on anything but our eyes. In The Eye Book, three eye care specialists present a comprehensive reference to help readers care for their eyes and protect their vision, with special attention to changes and diseases that occur in the adult years.

After detailing how the various parts of the eye work together so we can see, the authors review everything that can go wrong -- from myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism to the major disorders of cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. They also thoroughly describe each part of the eye and the problems that can develop, from the irritation of itchy eyelids and conjunctivitis to emergency situations such as a detached retina. They describe the signs and symptoms of all these problems and how to deal with them, including when to apply a warm compress -- and when to head to the emergency room. Medical and surgical treatment of both minor eye irritations and major diseases are explained in detail, so readers know where to turn and what to expect.

The authors also tell readers what happens during an eye examination and how to recognize an eye emergency. They explain all about eyeglasses, including the various kinds of bifocals, and describe the care and maintenance of contact lenses in a way that makes wearing them a viable option for anyone who wishes to do so. They detail the special concerns of people with systemic diseases such as diabetes and indicate how common medications -- from antibiotics and antidepressants to tamoxifen -- affect the eyes. The pros andcons of refractive surgery are discussed, as are the special problems of people with low vision.

An appendix lists medications used to treat eye conditions and the side effects of those medications. The book is fully illustrated with fifty-five line drawings and includes a symptoms index that will direct readers to sections of the book which describe the possible causes of the specific symptoms they are experiencing.

    Library Journal

Fear of reduced vision and blindness regularly tops surveys of consumers' concerns about their health. Therefore, comprehensive, current information on this small but vital area of the human body is a high priority for libraries answering consumer health queries. The authors are associated with the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University, consistently rated one of the top ophthalmology departments in the United States. Their guide covers routine eye care and the more common eye diseases, providing up-to-date facts on refractive surgery, treatment for optical neuritis, and possible nutritional therapies for cataracts and macular degeneration. Information on systemic and general health conditions affecting the eye is provided, as is a good introduction to the problem of "low vision," vision that cannot be corrected by spectacles, contact lenses, or introcular lens implants. The coverage of the newest refractive surgical techniques, clinical trials, and medications makes this an important acquisition for libraries with similar titles; highly recommended for public, school, and hospital libraries.--Pamela C. Sieving, W.K. Kellogg Eye Ctr., Univ. of Michigan, Ann Arbor

Parenting a Child with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or Breaking the Rules of Aging

Parenting a Child with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

    Author: Nancy S Boyles

A guide for parents and educators, Boyles and Contadino combine over 23 years of experience to provide basic information on strategies and ideas that may be useful when working with the AD/HD child. This updated edition helps parents navigate through the steps of recognizing the symptoms, getting proper diagnosis, and finding proven intervention techniques that will guide their child past the obstacles of this learning disability.

Nancy S. Boyles, M.Ed., is an educator who specializes in the area of intervention and consultation for children with learning differences. She is the coauthor of The Learning Differences Sourcebook.

Darlene Contadino, M.S.W., writes about AD/HD and has been active in support groups. She is the coauthor of The Learning Differences Sourcebook.

    Library Journal

These two titlesboth from authors who have experience parenting a child with attention deficit disorders and working as professionals in the fieldjoin a growing body of literature on parenting AD(H)D children. The books are similar in layout: early chapters define attention deficit disorders and their diagnosis, a substantial middle section covers strategies for managing a child's behavior, and concluding chapters and appendixes present additional materials for parents. Although many of the strategies and definitions are common to both books, differences of tone and style exist. Boyles and Contadino use more anecdotal and personal examples and stress the role of parent as child advocate. Flick clearly draws more on his position as a professional in the field, adapting a 12-step plan that parents can implement. Both books are recommended for parenting collections in public libraries; Flick's book is also recommended for community college and undergraduate libraries.Kay L. Breaking the Rules of Aging

    Author: David A Lipschitz

This book draws on the latest medical research to shatter some of the biggest myths about aging, and to outline a new way to understand and manage the aging process.

    Publishers Weekly

Old age gets a bad rap, argues geriatric specialist Lipschitz. The senior years do not inevitably mean loss of mental or physical prowess, he maintains: in fact, the cliched advice to "take it easy, you're not as young as you were" is exactly the wrong approach. Lipschitz cites studies showing that exercise is beneficial to the elderly, and that sexually active seniors live longer than celibate ones. He even decries the obsession to lose weight, claiming that "thin isn't healthy," since "pleasingly plump" (but not obese) people live longer. Lipschitz's approach is balanced and well reasoned, never fanatical. He argues against invasive surgery for most coronary disease, contending that if a person has no symptoms, surgery can cause more problems than it solves. However, he goes on to list specific conditions that do warrant surgical intervention. Many seniors are over-medicated, he notes, which leads to negative side effects, and he offers specific advice for replacing dozens of medications with a few carefully chosen ones. The host of a public television series called Aging Successfully with Doctor David, Lipschitz is articulate and entertaining, and he clearly explains medical terms and procedures for the layman. His upbeat book reassures seniors that if they look after themselves, their golden years can be their most rewarding. (Oct. 18) Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.
