Despite the glitzy title, this is one of the more appealing diet books among the new "anti-carb" programs. Agatston, a doctor based at Miami Beach's Mt. Sinai Medical Center, found that his patients not only were unable to stay on various popular diets but their cholesterol and blood sugar levels remained dangerously high after trying these plans. The doctor chose to alter his own diet-first avoiding all carbohydrates and fruit and then reintroducing these foods in moderation. Feeling better and losing weight, he then consulted a nutritionist to modify his strategy to devise a sound method for his patients. The South Beach diet begins with a somewhat restrictive two-week program, generally producing a weight loss of from eight to 13 pounds. The initial phase may be difficult for those who crave bread, pasta and fruit. But there are still choices, and snacks (cheese, hummus, vegetables) are a necessary part of the diet. People shouldn't feel hungry on this part of the diet, stresses the author. The second phase offers somewhat more choices, including whole wheat bread and other selected carbohydrates. Agatston advocates combining the "bad" with the "good." For example, take whole wheat bread and dip it into olive oil, rather than using butter. Eat a very small amount of pasta with lots of vegetables, meat and healthy oils. Complete meal plans along with simple recipes comprise roughly half the book. Of course, there's no perfect diet that works for everyone but the enthusiasm of the conversational tone and the inviting manner make the book more appealing than many other diet tomes. (Apr.) He draws on his extensive experience as researcher and physician to explore the relationships between benefits, risks, and the economic impact of prescription drugs. While the FDA comes under scrutiny for its failure to properly assess the risks of such medications as the diet drug Redux and the diabetes drug Rezulin, this is not another FDA-bashing book. Avorn's picture is bigger. Through case studies, he examines decisions made by the regulatory agencies, pharmaceutical companies, health policymakers, and physicians that reveal faults in the entire system. After examining how benefits and risks are discovered and measured, he turns to the difficult question of how these are balanced against each other when making decisions about a drug's use. Avorn finds that in the real world, the major source of information about drugs is the promotion departments of pharmaceutical companies. Surrounded by "an almost suffocating plethora of information of very uneven quality," physicians have not been prepared by their medical education to deal with it. He proposes an educational outreach program based in medical schools that would send academic "detail men" to doctors' offices just as drug companies do. Avorn points to Canada, Australia, and Great Britain as countries whose drug-assessment procedures we can learn from.     Description: This book offers a creative approach to providing information about group process in the treatment of addiction. Rather than providing information in a cognitive manner, the author invites the reader to enter into a group of first person participants.
    Purpose: Arising from a theory that addiction is a disease of isolation, the book's aim is to support an understanding of the primary role of group therapy in treatment. The style of the book allows the reader to enter into a group process and to learn from experience. For those willing to engage in this type of learning, the book is a great text.
    Audience: The author makes clear that this is not a self-help book. Rather, it is a book intended for the use of those who work with persons who have addictions.
    Features: The book has a unique style of asking the reader to join a group. Different fonts for each participant allow a conversation without the interruption of indicating the speaker. Some who are academically inclined might prefer a book based more on research. On the other hand, the professional who might not have time to attend a recovery group could develop helpful insights from the book's informal, though well developed approach.
    Assessment: At first, the varied fonts seem off-putting. The reader might not bother to go any farther than leafing or flipping through the pages. However, spending time with this group is very educational. The author's well-reasoned approach and the clear description of the application of this method of healing makes this an extraordinary book that is apt to be of interest to those with education in psychiatry as well as to those with a less technical background.

    Gua Sha: A Traditional Technique for Modern Practice

    This is the first English language book on the ancient therapeutic technique 'Gua Sha'. It is a technique commonly used in Asia and Southeast Asia by TCM practitioners, Chinese families and individuals who know and use it as part of their 'health culture'. In Gua Sha, the skin is pressured in strokes i.e. scraped (but not broken) by a blunt edge (Chinese families used a spoon). This, in Western terms, raises extravasated blood and metabolic waste which collects in muscle tissue, and encourages its departure. Gua Sha is often used to counteract muscle strain through athletic injury, back pain, and conditions beyond muscle injury alone. The result, visually, is livid discolouration of the skin which subsides in a few days, considerably faster than a bruise. For this reason practitioners in the West have been afraid of using it. However it can be a very useful technique to know how to use, and will enhance the skills of any practitioner using it while giving them another treatment method to help increase their clinical skills.This book brings the technique alive for Western practitioners, with clear discussion of how to do it - including correct technique, appropriate application, and difficulties to bear in mind - and when to use it, and superb colour illustrations and specially commissioned line drawings to demonstrate the technique. The author is an expert practitioner of 'Gua Sha'.
