Toning for Teens or The 30 Day Total Health Makeover

Toning for Teens: The 20-Minute Workout That Makes You Look Good and Feel Great!

Author: Joyce L Vedral

In the first total-body weight training book for teens, fitness guru Joyce Vedral teaches girls how to use weights to build strong, fit bodies. Targeting specific problems faced by teens-from what to eat in the cafeteria to how to stay healthyat summer camp-Vedral coaches girls through her diet and highly effective weight training workouts with her signature frankness. She discusses the body image issues which often begin in these formative years and teaches girls how to break self-sabotaging habits and establish a healthy mindset. Using her comprehensive diet, with menus included, and an exercise regimen illustrated in black and white photographs, Vedral shows adolescent girls how to use total-body weight training as the key to better health.

School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up-Fitness expert Vedral offers up a practical and doable workout specifically aimed at helping adolescent girls tone and firm their muscles using free weights. The 20-minute routine alternates upper-body work one day with lower-body work the next, and requires only three sets of inexpensive dumbbells and a bench or step. The author emphasizes sound nutrition and exercise information, dispelling common myths related to weight training, offering balanced advice on eating, and listing tips for maintaining fitness in problem situations. She writes enthusiastically, encouraging girls to strive for excellence in their personal health and life choices. The exercises are clearly described, and illustrated with photos of teens performing the routines. The reason for each exercise is stated, and tips for doing it correctly are included. Grow Younger Live Longer or The Joy of Partner Yoga

Grow Younger, Live Longer: Ten Steps to Reverse Aging

Author: Deepak Chopra

In the tradition of the mega-bestseller Ageless Body, Timeless Mind, Deepak Chopra, M.D., and his colleague David Simon, M.D., present ten practical steps that enable listeners to reset their biological age (which determines how you look and feel) as much as fifteen years lower than their chronological age.

The idea for this book was born in early Spring 2000, when Dr. Chopra was being interviewed on Larry King Live!. As the conversation turned to aging, Dr. Chopra listed ten steps we can take to reverse its effects. The phones at the television studio and the Chopra Center for Well Being lit up with calls from people wanting to know more. This phenomenal response clearly called for a more on the topic, and here it is.

At the heart of Grow Younger, Live Longer is a simple-to-follow program for personal renewal, complete with specific supplements, exercises, and meditation techniques. Among the steps are:
—Change your perception of time
—Access restful awareness and restful sleep
—Nourish your body with anit-aging food
—Eliminate toxins
—Make love the most important thing in your life

Library Journal

Chopra, alternative health guru and founder of the Chopra Center for Well Being in La Jolla, CA, and Simon, the center's medical director and cofounder, present a program to enhance mind/body integration that they contend will help reverse aging. In a previous book, Ageless Body, Timeless Mind (LJ 6/15/93), Chopra argued that mental, social, and intellectual activity can help people slow the aging process. Grow Younger suggests that readers who follow the advice offered can reset their biological age as much as 15 years lower than their chronological age. The authors outline ten steps: to make changes in how we perceive time, get enough of the right kind of sleep and rest, eat the right kinds of food, take nutritional complements (the authors prefer this term to supplements), enhance mind/body integration, eliminate toxins, cultivate flexibility and creativity, and make love the most import thing in our life. Conscious breath work and meditation are encouraged, exercises for flexibility are illustrated, seven vegetarian menus are provided, and a list of resources and a bibliography round out this book. Although his advice can be unorthodox, this work will be appreciated by Chopra's many readers; recommended for public libraries and specialized collections. Eat Right 4 Your Baby or The Secrets and Mysteries of Hawaii

    Eat Right 4 Your Baby

    Author: Peter J DAdamo

Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo applies his bestselling blood type diet plan to expectant parents and infants. This one-of-a-kind guide offers methods of maximizing health from fertility through every stage of pregnancy and the baby's first year:

    Publishers Weekly

The author, a naturopathic doctor, follows his bestselling guide to healthy eating based on blood type (Eat Right for Your Type) with a program designed to provide optimal conditions for fertility as well as for pregnancy and childbirth. D'Adamo, with the collaboration of freelance writer Whitney, utilizes current genetic research to explain the chemical reaction between blood type and food. Someone, for example, with Type O blood who wants to conceive should eat a diet that includes beef or lamb, as proteins from these meats help to create a beneficial physical atmosphere for conception. A woman with Type A blood, however, in order to create the best conditions for conception, should eliminate meat from her diet and consume fish and seafood as her chief sources of protein. Divided into sections for blood Types O, A, B and AB, D'Adamo provides nutritional strategies, including recipes, concerning detailed advice on what foods to consume, avoid, and how frequently to eat. According to the author, following these guidelines will facilitate trouble-free pregnancies and childbirths. He also suggests exercises for before and after birth that are based on type. To best recover from childbirth, an AB woman should rely more on stretching exercises, while a Type O mother can engage more quickly in aerobics. Included also are nutritional plans, based on blood type, for the new baby. This is a very useful tool for new parents with a strong interest in alternative medicine. (Apr.) Thai Yoga Massage: A Dynamic Therapy for Physical Well-Being and Spiritual Energy

    Author: Kam Thye Chow

An authentic guide to Thai yoga massage, a unique therapy that combines stretching, breath work, assisted yoga postures, and pressure point therapy.

    • Includes more than 80 illustrations, 30 charts, and a complete series of postures for a two-hour full-body massage.

    • Author Kam Thye Chow has taught massage in Thailand and throughout Europe and North America.

Until recently Thai yoga massage was virtually unknown in the West. It has its roots in both the ancient healing traditions of Ayurveda and Thai Buddhism. In this unique practice, the therapist gives a full-body massage that combines palming and thumbing along the Thai energy lines and pressure points with gentle stretching, movement, and breath work reminiscent of tai chi. Using his or her own hands, feet, arms, and legs, the practitioner gently guides the recipient through a series of yoga postures, creating a harmonious and therapeutic "dance" that leads to greater physical awareness, grace, and spiritual energy.

In this comprehensive guide for practitioners, Kam Thye Chow leads readers through every aspect of this dance--from its history and philosophy to a detailed presentation of a complete Thai yoga massage session. This important reference includes more than 80 illustrated postures, 30 charts and drawings, and a complete series of postures for a two-hour full-body massage that focuses attention on both the upper and lower body, which receive equal stress in the Western lifestyle. Information on contraindications, anatomy, and physiology integrates Western medical knowledge and theory with this ancient tradition. Massage therapists, physical therapists, nurses, and other medicalprofessionals will find Thai Yoga Massage an important and innovative complement to their practice.

Baby Emergency Handbook: Lifesaving Information Every Parent Needs to Know

    Author: Lawrence E Shapiro

In an emergency involving an infant or young child, the decisions you make may lead to either an amusing story to tell in twenty years or unspeakable tragedy. The difference between the two is often determined by whether you are well-informed and prepared to act decisively and calmly to ensure the safety of the youngster. From noted child psychologist Lawrence Shapiro, The Baby Emergency Handbook offers parents and caregivers lifesaving advice for dealing with some thirty-five common emergencies.

Organized in alphabetical order, each of the entries begins with a section on prevention. This is followed by a step-by-step action plan for dealing with the emergency as it happens. At the end of the entry, you'll find a section explaining any follow up that may be necessary. The entries take special care to point out those situations in which the "intuitive" response to a crisis is not the best one. The book also includes a pull-out infant/toddler CPR guide and a special section entitled "Secrets of Getting Fast Help in a Hospital Emergency Room."

Timeless Healing or Vegetarian Sports Nutrition

    Timeless Healing

    Author: Herbert Benson

In this life-changing book, Dr. Herbert Benson draws on his twenty-five years as a physician and researcher to reveal how affirming beliefs, particularly belief in a higher power, make an important contribution to our physical health. We are not simply nourished by meditation and prayer, but are, in essence, "wired for God."

Combining the wisdom of modem medicine and of age-old faith. Dr. Benson shows how anyone can, with the aid of a caring physician or healer, use their beliefs and other self-care methods to heal over 60 percent of medical problems.

As practical as it is spiritual, Timeless Healing is a blueprint for healing and transforming your life.

    Library Journal

Apropos to the world of modern medicine, Shakespeare wrote, "Oft expectation fails, and most oft there, Where it promises most." To this arena of lofty expectation and technological wizardry, Benson (Harvard Medical Sch.) again explores the healing power of the human psyche. As in his The Wellness Book (LJ 3/1/92), Benson illustrates via exhaustive case studies and anonymous examples the power of what has been erroneously labeled the placebo effect. Further, he cites numerous instances where the intersection of prayer and meditation have stemmed the tide of pain or disability, illuminating for the uninitiated the raw potency of the human will. Benson's academic credentials lend credence to his authoritative voice as he "demythologizes meditation" (says one early reviewer) as well as the world of wholistic healing. Somewhat overblown at times, Benson's previous works go far to cover much of what is reiterated here. Purchase where interest in spirituality and wholistic medicine is high or as an initial foray into this area.-Sandra Collins, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary Lib.

    Kirkus Reviews

An elaboration, a rehash even, of Benson's Beyond the Relaxation Response: How to Harness the Healing Power of Your Beliefs (1984).

Benson uses the analogy of a three-legged stool to describe how health and well-being rely on the balanced application of (1) pharmaceuticals, (2) surgery and procedures, and (3) self-care. Greater utilization of self-care has been his career focus, and here he recounts his discovery of the relaxation response, his research into the placebo effect (renamed here "remembered wellness"), and his identification of "the faith factor." Benson proposes that religious convictions enhance the relaxation response dramatically. He contends that as a species aware of its own mortality, human beings are "wired for God," that is, through evolution we have become genetically programmed to have faith in some absolute power. Further, he argues that affirmative beliefs, especially faith in God, have many positive effects on health. In 60 to 90 percent of doctor visits, he says, remembered wellness and other self-care techniques can be the treatment of choice, and he lists numerous specific conditions—asthma, insomnia, hypertension—in which studies show that belief plays a major role. The flip side of the coin is that negative thoughts elicit powerful negative effects, and he offers some ideas on dealing with these. Benson's utilitarian approach to religion may offend thoughtful believers, and his spiritual approach to healing may not sit well with the scientific crowd. An appendix plugging a video and 17 audiotapes on relaxation available from Benson's Mind/Body Medical Institute gives the whole project a self-serving air.

For those familiar with Benson's work, there's not much new here.

If Your Adolescent Has Depression or Bipolar Disorder or Feeding Your Child

If Your Adolescent Has Depression or Bipolar Disorder: An Essential Resource for Parents

    Author: Dwight L Evans

While coping with teenage moodiness can be difficult under any circumstances, it can be especially challenging if a teenager has a serious mood disorder. This concise, readable book is the definitive guide to understanding and getting effective help for adolescents with depression or bipolar disorder, designed for parents and other adults in contact with afflicted teens. It combines the most current scientific expertise available today--including the newest treatments and medications and the latest research findings on mood disorders--with no-nonsense, hands-on advice from parents who have faced these disorders in their own children.
Among other topics, the book addresses the biochemical roots of adolescent mood disorders, the ongoing debate over psychiatric medications for young people, and practical strategies for helping a teen cope at home and at school. It concludes on a hopeful note, by reviewing the latest scientific evidence on methods of stopping mood disorders before they start or minimizing the risk of recurrence. A growing body of research now shows that early diagnosis and treatment of depression and bipolar disorder may reduce the severity of these diseases, both now and in the future. Including red flags to look out for and warnings on the dangers of doing nothing, this book will provide the information and tools parents need to help adolescents achieve the best possible outcome.
On the Adolescent Mental Health Initiative series:
The Adolescent Mental Health Initiative series addresses some of the major mental health issues facing teenagers today--eating disorders, anxiety disorders, depression, and schizophrenia. Of the dozen or so books planned forthe series, the first four, including the two presented here, focus on how parents and other adults, including teachers, coaches, guidance counselors, and even pediatricians, can help afflicted teens overcome the disrupting and often devastating challenges of these disorders. Each book is an authoritative guide that offers essential information such as how to go about getting a diagnosis, what the latest treatment options and prevention strategies are, how to help teens cope with mental illness at home and at school and, perhaps most importantly, what the warning signs and red flags are that parents and other adults should look out for in teenagers who may be at risk for these diseases. Combining the expertise of leading psychiatrists and psychologists with the experience of everyday people who have faced these disorders in their own children, the books are designed to help adults deal effectively with adolescent mental illness and to empower them to act immediately and wisely in getting teens the best available treatment possible.

    Publishers Weekly

The belly, say Neena and Veena, is not only the center of a woman's body, but also metaphorically her emotional and spiritual core. The strikingly attractive sisters known as the Bellytwins, who combine their belly-dancing career with a line of popular workout DVDs and videos, promise the reader a "feminine, sensory makeover" that encompasses not only weight-loss advice but techniques for how to talk, walk and dress. The sisters believe "it's not being selfish to take care of yourself and do what you need to do." Their detailed descriptions of belly-dance moves, guidelines for applying makeup and dressing in sensual, colorful clothing, and tips for facial and body treatments using natural foods and essential oils are both revealing and delightful. Wise, eye-opening and embracing an unabashedly feminine perspective, this book reveals that the two women of Indian heritage (though born in California) are deeply connected to their bodies, the earth and their own pleasure: "all of life [is] a dance," write the authors, and this exotically charming book will make readers want to see their own lives the same way. Is This Your Child or Vegan

    Is This Your Child

    Author: Doris Rapp

    IS THIS YOUR CHILD?

These are the major symptoms of potentially unrecognized allergies. Does your child suffer from any of the following?

    • Allergic Nose Rub • Eye Circles • Red Ears • Red Cheeks • Eye Wrinkles • Aggression • Lack of Alertness • Mottled Tongue •

In this breakthrough book, Dr. Doris Rapp offers a simple yet effective approach to handling "problem" children. Is This Your Child? shows parents how to identify the common foods, chemicals, or common allergic substances that could be the culprits that cause some children or adults to feel unwell or act inappropriately. If your child is always sick, hyperactive, a slow learner, or cranky, the first question you should ask is not "What drug should be prescribed?" or "What have I done wrong as a parent?" Instead, find out the cause.

Dr. Rapp gives sensible suggestions about how these reactions to foods and environmental factors can be recognized, prevented, and treated. With this information, many affected children should feel, act, behave, and learn better. If you can detect unsuspected environmental illness in your child--or yourself--you can change your lives so you're more content, happy, and free of illness.

Cancer Has Its Privileges or Healing Through the Dark Emotions

Cancer survivor and founder of The Cancer Club®, Christine Clifford has been sharing her inspiring, humorous outlook on living with cancer with thousands of cancer patients and their families. Now she has gathered a collection of battlefield stories and anecdotes from her fellow survivors that go from the outright hilarious to the downright moving, and combined them with her own personal story of triumphant survival.

"The perfect dose of medicine for anyone whose life has been touched by cancer." (Michele Smith, Olympic gold medalist)

Healing Through the Dark Emotions: The Wisdom of Grief, Fear, and Despair

    Author: Miriam Greenspan

We are all touched at some point by the dark emotions of grief, fear, or despair. In an age of global threat, these emotions have become widespread and overwhelming. While conventional wisdom warns us of the harmful effects of "negative" emotions, this revolutionary book offers a more hopeful view: there is a redemptive power in our worst feelings. Seasoned psychotherapist Miriam Greenspan argues that it's the avoidance and denial of the dark emotions that results in the escalating psychological disorders of our time: depression, anxiety, addiction, psychic numbing, and irrational violence. And she shows us how to trust the wisdom of the dark emotions to guide, heal, and transform our lives and our world. Drawing on inspiring stories from her psychotherapy practice and personal life, and including a complete set of emotional exercises, Greenspan teaches the art of emotional alchemy by which grief turns to gratitude, fear opens the door to joy, and despair becomes the ground of a more resilient faith in life.

    The Los Angeles Times

By calling the emotions "dark," Greenspan does not mean that they are bad, only that our culture encourages us to suppress and shun them. In her view, there are no negative emotions, only human emotions and negative attitudes toward emotions that we can't bear. — Kim Chernin

    Publishers Weekly

In this heartfelt therapeutic manifesto, psychotherapist Greenspan (A New Approach to Women and Therapy) argues that grief, fear and despair are not pathologies to be medicated away but emotions that help us grow psychologically and spiritually. The disavowal of these painful emotions (which she blames on Western culture s privileging of masculine reason over feminine emotion; lifelong lessons in suppressing emotional pain; and modern psychology s focus on dispelling feelings, not learning from them ) leads to depression, numbness and violence in both individuals and the world at large. But by attending, befriending, and surrendering to grief, fear and despair we can effect an alchemical transformation through which they become gratitude, faith and joy. Greenspan s eclectic approach to healing invokes depth psychology, Hasidic Judaism and Buddhist meditation ; her desire to make meaning out of suffering owes something to religious traditions that acknowledge the redemptive value of pain, as well as psychoanalysis s dedication to lighting up the mind s dark recesses, while her praxis includes New Age and recovery movement therapeutics such as visualization, breathing exercises, chakra bodytalk and prayer. Drawing on her clinical experience and her own painful recollections of the death of her infant son and her parents travails during the Second World War, Greenspan writes intensely and compassionately. This is a committed, serious look at the emotions most of us would rather sweep under the rug. (Jan. 28) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

The Alcoholism and Addiction Cure or Think Like a Pancreas

The Alcoholism and Addiction Cure: A Holistic Approach to Total Recovery

    Author: Chris Prentiss

The Alcoholism and Addiction Cure contains the three-step holistic program to total recovery that is the basis of the miraculous success of Passages. In this revolutionary book, you will learn: The three steps to permanent sobriety, The four causes of dependency, How to create a personalized, holistic treatment program to completely cure your dependency, How your thoughts, emotions, and beliefs are key factors in your recovery, How to stimulate your body's self-healing potential to be forever free of dependency.

"Freedom from dependency starts with understanding that alcohol, drugs, and addictive behaviors are not the real problems," says Chris Prentiss, cofounder of Passages Addiction Cure Center. "Alcohol, street drugs, nicotine, prescription medications, food bingeing, gambling, and the like are merely the substances or behaviors you or your loved ones are using to cope with the real problems-anything from deep emotional pain, ill health, or depression to hypoglycemia, a sluggish thyroid, or brain-wave pattern imbalances. Once the underlying problems are discovered and cured, the need for drugs, alcohol, or addictive behavior will disappear-along with the craving."

Prentiss should know. His son Pax was addicted to heroin, cocaine, and alcohol for ten years. They sought help everywhere, but Pax relapsed again and again. In desperation, they finally created their own holistic, hand-tailored program that was a complete break from all other programs and that combined several effective therapies. It saved Pax's life. Together, father and son founded Passages Addiction Cure Center to help others find their own freedom.

For decades, we've been hearing that alcoholism andaddiction are incurable diseases, but The Alcoholism and Addiction Cure proves that this is a dangerous myth and that the label of "alcoholic" or "addict" destroys the promise of full recovery. Today, thousands are being freed from the old, limiting paradigms by using the groundbreaking approach spelled out in this book. A visionary and an innovator, Chris Prentiss brings new hope to people everywhere who are dependent on drugs, alcohol, or addictive behaviors.

Think Like a Pancreas: A User's Guide to Managing Diabetes with Insulin

    Author: Gary Scheiner

There are dozens of books about managing diabetes, but none focuses specifically on using insulin. Now, in Think Like a Pancreas, certified diabetes educator and type 1 insulin user Gary Scheiner gives readers everything they need to know to "think like a pancreas," i.e., to successfully master the art of matching insulin to the body's ever-changing needs. A comprehensive, supremely practical guide free of medical mumbo jumbo, Think Like a Pancreas discusses day-to-day blood glucose control and monitoring; measuring and matching insulin to carbohydrate intake; the pluses and minuses of different insulin-delivery methods; hypoglycemia; exercise; the impact of emotions, stress, and illness; and the dozens of other issues that everyone taking insulin needs to master. A book that is long overdue, this first-ever, indispensable, all-in-one resource will enlighten and inspire the four million people whose lives and well-being depend on daily insulin intake.

    Library Journal

Writing for insulin-dependent diabetics, certified diabetes educator and exercise physiologist Scheiner covers the knowledge and actions needed to control blood glucose levels successfully: an understanding of insulin types, proper use of equipment, coordination with the healthcare team, diet and exercise, and a positive attitude. As a Type 1 diabetic, he relates his own difficult experience of adapting his lifestyle and regulating his blood sugar with the less advanced knowledge and technologies of 1986. He then discusses improvements in equipment and medications that have made tighter control possible, emphasizing the long-term benefits of quality disease management. Scheiner's analogies are excellent, and his examples of maintaining control while traveling, dining out, or ill are concrete and instructive. Only the explanations on insulin dosing confuse, and that's due to the complicated nature of the subject, not Scheiner's writing. For motivated readers, then, and consumer health collections. The South Beach Diet Supercharged or Cancer Schmancer

The South Beach Diet Supercharged: Faster Weight Loss and Better Health for Life

    Author: Arthur Agatston

Five years ago, with the publication of The South Beach Diet, renowned Miami cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston set out to change the way America eats. Now he has an even more ambitious goal: to change the way America lives by helping Americans become fitter as well as thinner and healthier . . . for life.      In the all-new The South Beach Diet Supercharged, Dr. Agatston shows you how to rev up your metabolism and lose weight faster while following the proven healthy eating principles of the original diet: choose good carbs, good fats, lean protein, and low-fat dairy. Collaborating with Dr. Joseph Signorile, a professor of exercise physiology at the University of Miami, Dr. Agatston presents a cutting-edge, three-phase workout that perfectly complements the three phases of the diet itself. Based on the latest exercise science, this ease-into-it fitness program combines low- and high-intensity interval exercise (with a focus on walking) and functional core body-toning exercises. The result: You'll look fitter and you'll burn more fat and calories all day—even at rest.      Also included is the latest nutritional research on how specific foods high in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and a host of phytonutrients help keep you healthy; new and expanded lists of Foods to Enjoy; taste-tempting Meal Plans for phases 1 and 2; and dozens of easy-to-prepare new recipes, including Eggs Frijoles, Chock-Full-of-Veggies Chili, Roasted Tomato Soup, Homestyle Turkey Meatloaf, and South Beach Diet Tiramisu. In every chapter you'll find inspiring success stories from real-life South Beach dieters andplenty of effective weight loss tips. And as an added bonus, Dr. Agatston answers the questions you've most often asked him about the diet since the original book was published.

    Publishers Weekly

Releasing five years after cardiologist Agatston's South Beach Diethit the shelves, initiating a megamillion-dollar franchise (cookbooks, a dining guide, meal replacement bars, frozen foods, etc.), this "supercharged" version of the plan guides readers into a healthy lifestyle for the long haul. While the first book focused on ending cravings and losing and maintaining a healthy weight, here Agatston introduces a 20-minute-a-day fitness regimen, developed with exercise physiologist Signorile and Pilates instructor Kris Belding. The two-part workout—interval walking (cardio) and total body (core)—geared to boosting metabolism and preventing plateaus, works in three phases in conjunction with the diet and can be adapted to different fitness levels and conditions. An overview of Agatston's philosophy on optimal nutrition, a recap of the diet, detailed daily fitness routines, tips on exercising efficiently, sample meal plans and simple recipes (Moroccan lemon chicken; maple-almond flan) are among the many features that make this appealing, accessible volume a worthwhile update on the original. Cancer Schmancer

    Author: Fran Drescher

Part inspirational cancer-survival story, part memoir-as-laugh-riot, Cancer Schmancer picks up where Fran's last book, Enter Whining, left off. After the publication of that book, Fran's life launched into a downward spiral. She separated from a long and complicated relationship, her TV series started to slip in the ratings, and her beloved dog Chester Drescher's health was in major decline. Then came the mysterious symptoms no doctor could adequately explain. With her trademark humor, Fran tells of her indefatigable search for answers and the cancer diagnosis that she ultimately beat. But not before a gold mine of humorous insights were revealed to her about what really matters most in life.

    Vanity Fair

...irrepressible Fran Drescher's frank and sassy account of coping with the big C.

    Publishers Weekly

Drescher, most famous for her loud, nasal voice and her role on the 1990s TV series The Nanny, advises readers to "open a mouth" when dealing with their doctors in this down-to-earth account of her experience with uterine cancer. In the book which serves as an unexpected follow-up to her 1995 memoir, Enter Whining, the actress describes living with symptoms for more than two years while shuttling from doctor to doctor without a diagnosis. She then depicts the hysterectomy that followed as well as her recovery, focusing mostly on the support she received from her friends and family and her first post-divorce boyfriend, who is 16 years her junior. She also devotes a chapter to the loss of her beloved dog, Chester Drescher. Consistently frank about her emotional ups and downs, Drescher addresses important quality-of-life issues such as fatigue and sex. Yet it is her storytelling skills and humor that make this uncomplicated book a good read. Although Drescher sometimes lapses into therapy-speak, tracing everything back to childhood, her one-liners can be priceless. Readers will warm to this straight-talking Queens native, even if they do tire of her celebrity woes (such as facing the paparazzi too soon after surgery). Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

    Library Journal

Television star (The Nanny) and author (Enter Whining) Drescher details the two-year, eight-plus-doctor ordeal she endured to diagnose her uterine cancer. She goes from gynecologist (two) and internist to hematologist to oncologist/breast specialist, back to gynecologist, then to vascular specialist, neurologist, and finally gynecologist (the third) before discovering the cause of her bleeding, cramping, and painful sex. She underwent surgery, refused radiation, and continues to play in the fields of celebrity. Drescher also discusses the mechanics of putting out a weekly TV series, the breakup of her longtime marriage, and meeting a new man. If only the writing were not so pedestrian and the trivia so trivial (do we need to read about her trip to Paris?), we might have cheered for the actress, who claims that fame didn't get her better treatment (in truth, it probably did). Even Drescher's trademark humor isn't all that funny here. Fans of Drescher and her now-defunct series will want to read this; others who might pick it up will only respond, "Oy vey." Pizza, pasta, hamburgers, sushi, tacos, and french fries . . . whether our ancestors were born in Madrid, Malaysia, or Mexico, chances are our daily food choices come from all around the globe. Unfortunately, we have taken some of the worst aspects of our varied ancestral menus to turn healthy cuisine into not-so-healthy junk food. Where did we go wrong?

Why is it that non-Western immigrants are so much more susceptible to diabetes and other diet-related chronic diseases than white Americans? How is it possible that relatively poor native populations in Mexico and Africa have such low levels of the chronic diseases that plague the United States? What is the secret behind the extremely low rate of clinical depression in Iceland—a country where dreary weather is the norm? The Jungle Effect has the life-changing answers to these important questions, and many more.

Dr. Daphne Miller undertook a worldwide quest to find diets that are both delicious and healthy. Written in a style reminiscent of Michael Pollan and Barbara Kingsolver, this book is filled with inspiring stories from Dr. Miller's patients, quirky travel adventures, interviews with world-renowned food experts, delicious (yet authentic) indigenous recipes, and valuable diet secrets that will stick with you for a lifetime.

Whether it's the heart-healthy Cretan diet, with its reliance on olive oil and fresh vegetables; the antidepression Icelandic diet and its extremely high levels of Omega 3s; the age-defying Okinawa diet and its emphasis on vegetables and fish; or the other diets explored herein, everyone who reads this book will come away with the secrets of a longer, healthier lifeand the recipes necessary to put those secrets into effect.

Family physician Miller had seen countless cases of chronic illness and weight gain, but it wasn't until she saw a patient recently returned from Brazil that a light bulb went off in her head: the patient had noticed marked improvement after just a few weeks in her father's native village. Intrigued, Miller did some research and found a number of "cold spots" around the world, areas where chronic diseases like diabetes, depression and heart disease are disproportionately low. She then embarked on a world tour to find out why. As she travels through Copper Canyon, Mexico to Cameroon, West Africa to Iceland-where locals manage to avoid depression in one of the darkest and coldest regions in the world-and beyond, Miller finds that, in each case, local diet plays a key role. Many of her overarching tips will sound familiar (eat fresh foods, eat more fish, avoid refined sugar, watch the salt, etc.), but a handful of suggestions, such as eating fermented foods and using mushrooms to fight cancer, should come as news. Miller's work is consistently informative and educational, if at times meandering; each "cold spot" is accompanied by a specific regimen, and Miller's practical advice and recipes are all geared for the novice. Anyone unafraid of modifying their diet will find this anthropological diet guide useful.

Younger Next Year: A Man's Guide to Living like 50 until You're 80 and Beyond

    Author: Chris Crowley

Turn back your biological clock. A breakthrough book for men--as much fun to read as it is persuasive--Younger Next Year draws on the very latest science of aging to show how men 50 or older can become functionally younger every year for the next five to ten years, and continue to live like fifty-year-olds until well into their eighties. To enjoy life and be stronger, healthier, and more alert. To stave off 70% of the normal decay associated with aging (weakness, sore joints, apathy), and to eliminate over 50% of all illness and potential injuries. This is the real thing, a program that will work for anyone who decides to apply himself to "Harry's Rules."

Harry is Henry S. Lodge, M.D., a specialist in internal medicine and preventive healthcare. Chris Crowley is Harry's 70-year-old patient who's stronger today (and skiing better) than when he was 40. Together, in alternating chapters that are lively, sometimes outspoken, and always utterly convincing, they spell out Harry's Rules and the science behind them. The rules are deceptively simple: Exercise Six Days a Week. Eat What You Know You Should. Connect to Other People and Commit to Feeling Passionate About Something. The science, simplified and demystified, ranges from the molecular biology of growth and decay to how our bodies and minds evolved (and why they fare so poorly in our sedentary, all-feast no-famine culture). The result is nothing less than a paradigm shift in our view of aging.

Welcome to the next third of your life--train for it, and you'll have a ball.

Disease Proof Your Child or Healing the Wounds of Sexual Addiction

Disease-Proof Your Child: Feeding Kids Right

    Author: Joel Fuhrman

In his private practice, Joel Fuhrman, M.D. helps families transform their eating habits and recover their health. His nutrient-rich eating plan can have a significant impact on your child’s resistance to dangerous infections, and a dramatic effect on reducing the occurrence of illnesses like asthma, ear infections, and allergies.  Dr. Fuhrman explains how you can make sure your children are eating right to maintain a healthy mind and body, and how eating certain foods and avoiding others can positively impact your child’s IQ and success in school.
He also presents the fascinating science that demonstrates that the current epidemic of adult cancers and other diseases is closely linked to what we eat in the first quarter of life. Eating well in our early years may enable us to win the war on cancer. Bolstered by this scientific evidence, he helps you do everything you can to protect your child against developing diabetes, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune diseases, and cancer through a solid nutritional groundwork.
Featuring easy-to-prepare, kid-friendly recipes that will satisfy even the pickiest eaters, your whole family will learn to establish life-long healthful eating habits.
Harness the power of a nutrient-rich diet to ensure a lifetime free of illness and full of health!

    Library Journal

In his latest book (after Eat To Live), physician Fuhrman does not make a terribly radical point: kids need to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables to ward off disease. However, he also alleges that a child's diet before the age of ten may have a dramatic effect on the occurrence of diseases much later in life, such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. In addition, he maintains that "superior nutrition"-a healthy mix of "good" fats; ample fruits, vegetables, and beans; and whole foods-can ameliorate eczema, ADHD, allergies, ear infections, and other ailments. If children's food options are all healthy ones, he assures readers that kids will eat what they need; they will not starve if there are no chicken nuggets. Although Fuhrman is emphatic about fruits and vegetables, he does not go so far as to advocate eschewing all animal products. Rather, he provides the advantages and disadvantages to vegan, vegetarian, and omnivorous diets, explaining how to choose the best foods within each model. He also bucks some of the traditional child nutrition experts, who previously advocated dairy products and carbohydrate-rich diets. Including many suggestions, tips, patient stories, and even some recipes, this nutrition guide is good for public libraries with an extensive consumer health section.-Elaine M. ChiWalking or Sleep Away the Pounds

ChiWalking: Fitness Walking for Lifelong Health and Energy

    Author: Danny Dreyer

A revolutionary program that blends the health benefits of walking with the core principles of T'ai Chi to deliver maximum physical, mental, and spiritual fitness

The low-impact health benefits of walking have made it one of the most popular forms of daily exercise. Yet few people experience all the benefits that walking can offer.

In ChiWalking, Danny and Katherine Dreyer, well-known walking and running coaches, teach the walking technique they created that transforms walking from a mundane means of locomotion into an intensely rewarding practice that enhances mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Similar to Pilates, yoga, and T'ai Chi, ChiWalking emphasizes body alignment and mindfulness while strengthening the core muscles of the body.

The five mindful steps of the ChiWalking program will get anyone, regardless of age or athletic ability, into great shape from head to toe, inside and out.

    1. Get aligned. Develop great posture and better balance.

    2. Engage your core. Make back and knee pain disappear.

    3. Create balance. Walk faster, farther, and with less effort.

    4. Make a choice. Choose from a menu of twelve great walks such as the Cardio Walk, the Energizing Walk, or the Walking Meditation, to keep your exercise program fresh.

    5. Move forward. Make walking any distance a mindful, enjoyable experience, whether you're a beginner or a seasoned walker.

    Library Journal

Unless you are unable to walk, you probably take walking for granted. To most people, it doesn't seem like an important physical activity or even a sport. Yet, according to Danny Dreyer and Katherine Dreyer, some 80 million Americans consider walking their most important physical activity. For this sequel to their ChiRunning, the authors apply the principles of balance and energy from t'ai chi to create "ChiWalking." The 11 chapters follow their "Five Mindful Steps": "Get Aligned," "Engage Your Core," "Create Balance," "Make a Choice," and "Move Forward." Each chapter is filled with good black-and-white photographs illustrating the techniques discussed; pictures showing the best technique are side by side with pictures showing the worst technique. This book would be helpful for those interested in walking for their health. Recommended for all consumer health collections.-Marge Kars, Bronson Methodist Hosp., Kalamazoo, MI Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
